LAND Research Lab

Applied research and data-driven innovation for landscape consulting

The Research Lab is the LAND group’s innovation and knowledge platform. It researches and develops novel methods and digital instruments to enhance urban climate resilience. Together with municipalities, businesses, and academic partners it drives applied research initiatives and offers science-based consulting and capacity building at the intersection of sustainability and digitalization. A central mission of the Lab is the introduction of fact-based and AI-powered planning, to make sustainability measurable and plannable.

Services & Tools

Based on the UN’s SEEA Ecosystem Accounting framework, LAND’s approach to natural capital accounting (NCA) is aimed at analyzing specific areas, using different scales and both public and private property, to quantify natural capital in terms of extension, state of health, and benefits provided by ecosystems. In particular, ecosystem services are services that natural systems generate for the environment and thus for human beings. Assessing natural capital from an ecosystemic perspective makes it possible to analyze landscapes and organize data on habitats within a particular spatial area by tracking changes in resources and connecting environmental information to human activity.

LIM landscape information modeling® is adding a new dimension to Building Information Modeling (BIM), helping professionals to design nature-based solutions for greener and healthier cities using a data-driven approach. We revolutionize the way we design urban landscapes by measuring its impact on air quality, water storage management, soil conditions, and plant growth in order to improve the well-being of people in cities.

By gathering and interpreting environmental data, LAND can contribute to CSR processes by supporting clients in developing sustainability strategies. With our LAND Sustainability Compass® we combine the four dimensions of sustainability and the three principles of NEB with the main targets of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, providing an evaluation of corporate impacts in the specific fields. This allows us to develop plans of action based on landscape interventions.

The main goal of biodiversity mapping in urban areas is to support decision-makers and policymakers in choosing strategies aimed at preserving and improving nature, as described by the development goals of the European Commission's Biodiversity Strategy 2030. The biodiversity mapping that LAND carried out within T-Factor helped create a cutting-edge service for evaluating ecosystem services, assuring that the environmental features of urban spaces would encourage biodiversity.
