CariGO GREEN3, Collio XR Gorizia, is an open-air laboratory for a sustainable development based on an experiential and interactive approach.

“CariGO GREEN3, Collio XR Gorizia, where technology meets landscape and people” initiative represents an innovative approach to territorial development in the picturesque Gorizia Landscape of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, bordering Slovenia. Spearheaded by the Fondazione Cassa di risparmio di Gorizia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering social and economic growth in Gorizia, this program leverages the foundation’s commitment to nurturing its local environment as a proactive community leader.

In collaboration with IKON, a forward-thinking digital farm, the project builds on the “Carso 2014+” masterplan, originally crafted for Gorizia Province in 2007. Launched as a three-year initiative from 2018 to 2020, CariGO GREEN3 aims to cultivate a greener, more sustainable region with lasting benefits for local heritage, tourism, and development.

The program encompasses three interconnected projects designed to transform the landscape into a productive and exploratory space. Visitors can delve in Gorizia’s rich culture seamlessly integrated throughout the territory, enhanced by cutting-edge, complimentary technology. This strategic partnership not only promotes ecological stewardship but also enriches the community’s cultural and economic vitality, setting a benchmark for regional development.

The project is located in an internal area of the Isonzo territory: the Collio Hills, which is seen through the 17 sustainable development goals identified by the United Nations. The Collio as an “open-air laboratory of sustainable development” is the leitmotif of the intervention, which is based on an experiential and interactive approach, focused simultaneously on innovation and authenticity and the importance and recovery of slow cycle and pedestrian connections. The stories of the territory’s places, people, products, and peculiarities thus become a gateway to entering into a relationship with the territory and discovering the landscape through an immersive experience in which emotion plays a leading role.

Collio XR (extended reality) allows visitors to read the landscape they are crossing more deeply through a digital but non-invasive approach based on narration with audio listening and VR and AR content in the existing rest areas. The project managed the integration of nature, infrastructure, culture, and economy within one strategy and in each part due to the naturalistic, cultural, and historical connection within and with the surroundings.
