Regeneration project for GAM - Civic Gallery, Turin

The landscape strategy focuses on redefining the outdoor areas as a connective interface between the museum and its urban context. The existing green space is reinterpreted as a contemporary agora: a tree-lined, fully traversable square designed to host artworks, events, everyday pauses, and new cultural uses. The ground composition – through its surfaces, pathways, and vegetation – organises a sequence of “urban rooms”, shifting fluidly between more public, connective conditions and more intimate, immersive, and contemplative settings.

At the core of the landscape concept are two guiding figures: the “Hourglass”, which structures flows, thresholds, and spatial expansions along the museum’s main transversal axis, and the “Green Spiral”, a sensory, continuous path unfolding around the building. Native and naturalised planting enhances microclimatic comfort, mitigates the urban heat island effect, and supports urban biodiversity. In parallel, the open space system integrates sustainable drainage strategies, rain gardens, and water harvesting and reuse systems, embedding environmental infrastructure into the visitor experience.

In this way, the GAM landscape becomes an extension of the museum into the city – an accessible, inclusive, and dynamic public realm where art, nature, and community merge into a single, coherent contemporary narrative.
