The Potential of Sponge Cities and Biodiversity

Rather than treating each existing playground as an isolated space, the project proposes a diversified network of regenerated neighbourhood playgrounds and parks, each with its own character and role. Together, they form a “ring of play”: a connected system in which places such as Bomborozzo and Gerso strengthen everyday play and social life within the neighborhoods. Bomborozzo is currently under development, while Gerso is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. A potential second phase could extend the network to Via Ciusarella, Tre Pini, Madonna della Salute and Ippocastano.
At the heart of the design is an inclusive and multigenerational approach. The parks are conceived for different age groups, going from early childhood to school-age children, adolescents, adults and seniors. Across the network, the design approach combines accessible paths, seating, lighting, play equipment and community facilities according to the specific context of each site.
Nature is an active part of this transformation. The project proposes depaving impermeable surfaces, introducing new vegetation and flowering areas, maintaining existing trees and promoting permeable materials, while integrating measures that support biodiversity and cooler outdoor spaces.
Parco dello Sport e del Gioco Nosedo, completed in September 2026, represents the main communal hub within this network. With 4,900 m², the park is conceived as a community-focused sports and recreational space connected to the surrounding schools, gym and sports field. The proposal preserves and enhances the existing trees while introducing new vegetation, a protected children’s area, a play tower, water play, an outdoor gym and a bocce court. New accessible paths, seating and play areas further support everyday use and social interaction across different generations.
The different spaces therefore become part of a wider landscape strategy while retaining their own identity. The result is a network in which play, Nature and social life can coexist across Massagno.
