LAND OnSite - New Pavilion Policlinico di Milano

A suspended therapeutic landscape is taking shape above the city, bringing nature, care, and climate resilience together in the heart of Milan.

On the morning of 23 April, together with Techint, our team from LAND Italia visited the rooftop of the New Pavilion of Policlinico di Milano for a LAND OnSite inspection.

Today, the roof is still an active construction site: storage areas, materials and ongoing works. It reflects the extraordinary complexity of an intervention located in a dense and sensitive context, in the heart of Milan, where space is limited and the hospital has continued to operate throughout the construction process. Yet even at this stage, the scale and potential of this place are already visible.

Here, one of the largest hospital therapeutic roof gardens in the world will take shape: over 7,000 sqm of green roof dedicated to the wellbeing of patients, visitors, and healthcare staff. A new suspended landscape above Milan, designed as a space for care, rehabilitation, and respite.

The perimeter green crown has already been completed with its shrub layer, now visible from street level. In some areas, the first technical layers of the green roof build-up have been installed, while the reorganisation of materials will allow the next phases of work to begin at the end of summer.

Reaching the rooftop, the strongest impression is one of air and openness. In the centre of Milan, 7,000 sqm of open space is a rare urban condition. It is easy to imagine what this place will become: therapeutic paths immersed in greenery, areas for rest and social interaction, sunlight filtering through tree canopies, and a renewed relationship between nature and care.

The project does not treat greenery as a decorative layer, but as a climatic and therapeutic infrastructure. It is designed to improve the urban microclimate, absorb microparticles, mitigate noise, and contribute concretely to the physical and psychological wellbeing of people.
