LAND brings the landscape perspective at National Day for Hydrogeological Risk Prevention and Mitigation

We took part in the 3ª Giornata Nazionale della Prevenzione e Mitigazione del Rischio Idrogeologico, held in Rome and promoted by the National Council of Engineers and the National Council of Geologists.

The event brought together representatives from institutions, academia and the technical-scientific community to discuss new governance models and integrated strategies for protecting territories increasingly exposed to the effects of climate change.

Representing LAND was Shirly Mantin, who contributed to the panel Esperienze a confronto with a presentation dedicated to Città Metropolitana Spugna, the integrated urban plan promoted by Città metropolitana di Milano and Gruppo CAP, developed within contexts defined by LAND and J+S SpA.

Her contribution highlighted the strategic role of landscape architecture in addressing hydrogeological risk. Rather than considering risk management as a purely technical matter, the presentation explored how the landscape can become an operational framework to interpret vulnerabilities, anticipate critical issues and develop integrated responses that connect ecology, infrastructure and public space.

Through the experience of Città Metropolitana Spugna, we shared three key messages:

  • Risk prevention begins with reading the landscape. Soil, water, environmental fragilities and local communities must be considered together to shape effective and lasting solutions.
  • Nature is an active resilience device. Nature-based strategies can help mitigate risk while generating ecological, climatic and social benefits.
  • Public works should become a shared collective heritage. Beyond their functional role, they should create recognisable and meaningful landscapes that strengthen the relationship between people and places.

The participation of Shirly Mantin in this national forum reinforces our commitment to promoting an interdisciplinary approach to climate adaptation, where landscape architecture contributes not only to the quality of public spaces but also to the resilience and long-term safety of territories.

As climate-related challenges become increasingly complex, projects such as Città Metropolitana Spugna demonstrate how landscape can transform risk management into an ecological and public infrastructure—one that protects communities while generating environmental and urban value.
