AI for Decision-Making in Urban Planning: LAND at ISOCARP Masterclass in Riyadh
At the end of November, LAND took an active role in shaping the international debate on AI-driven urban planning during the ISOCARP Masterclass, with Nikolas Neubert, CIO at LAND and Managing Director of the LAND Research Lab, contributing as a key voice in the programme.
The international training initiative brought together experts, practitioners, and decision-makers to explore how artificial intelligence, no-code workflows, and ecological and climate data can directly inform and improve urban planning decisions. Within this context, LAND showcased how advanced, data-informed methodologies can translate complex datasets into actionable spatial strategies, supporting the development of cooler, healthier, and more regenerative neighbourhoods, particularly within large-scale and climate-sensitive urban projects.
The masterclass was organised by the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), under the academic direction of Areti Markopoulou, in collaboration with infrared.city CEO Angelos Chronis, and hosted with the support of ISOCARP (International Society of City and Regional Planners in Riyadh) and local partners in Riyadh. The initiative was held in preparation for the 61st World Congress of City and Regional Planners (WPC61).
Throughout the programme, Nikolas Neubert joined an international group of speakers and contributors — including Emanuele Naboni, Serjoscha Düring, Jan Bunge, Laura Narvaez, Hussam Raouf, and Markus Appenzeller — and engaged with more than 50 participants from public authorities, infrastructure providers, policy-making institutions, and urban planning organisations across the MENA region and beyond.
During the masterclass, LAND positioned itself as a front-runner in the application of AI to landscape and urban planning, presenting cutting-edge approaches developed within the LAND Research Lab. The contribution highlighted how AI-supported tools can strengthen strategic decision-making at scale, particularly in complex urban environments and major development projects.
LAND’s involvement in initiatives such as this underlines our ongoing commitment to research, collaboration, and the advancement of innovative methodologies at the intersection of landscape, urban planning, and digital innovation, with a growing impact in international and MENA-region contexts.
