The proposal envisions the revitalization of the existing 1960s administrative building, preserving its familiar identity within the community while complementing it with a contemporary extension. A lively, multifunctional public space is being created – the new Aldenhoven Civic Centre.

LAND’s competition entry for the new Civic Center in Aldenhoven is rooted in a strong commitment to sustainability and contextual integration. The proposal envisions the revitalization of the existing 1960s administrative building, preserving its familiar identity within the community while complementing it with a contemporary extension. A lively, multifunctional public space is being created – the new Aldenhoven Civic Centre.

At the heart of the new development lies a multifunctional public ensemble creating a harmonious dialogue between built form and green space. A renovated administrative hub, a youth and adult education center, and a flexible civic hall enrich the urban fabric and address the evolving needs of Aldenhoven’s residents, supporting social engagement, education, and cultural exchange. The compact, comb-like configuration of the new buildings ensures natural daylight and a view into the green surroundings for all interior spaces.

Landscape design plays a pivotal role in shaping the character and function of the site. Nature-based solutions are integrated throughout the public realm, including rainwater retention areas and green roofs that enhance biodiversity, regulate temperature, and manage stormwater. The gently terraced terrain behind the buildings offers accessible, nature-oriented outdoor spaces that invite recreation, relaxation, and connection. Shaded walkways, play zones, seating areas, and small ponds offer a rich spatial experience for all generations.

The use of permeable paving made from recycled materials minimizes soil sealing, while a new mobility concept prioritizes pedestrians and cyclists. A redesigned forecourt with integrated green space and bicycle parking strengthens the interface between buildings, parks, and the surrounding townscape, fostering seamless connections and encouraging slow mobility patterns.

In line with the goals of the STARK directive and the STEP RR program for the revitalization of former mining regions in Rhineland, this proposal reflects a holistic approach. Architecture, landscape, and mobility converge to form a resilient, people-centered urban environment—one that honors Aldenhoven’s heritage while preparing it for a vibrant and climate-conscious future.

Developed together with GINA Barcelona Architects and Werner Sobek Green Technologies GmbH, the competition design was awarded the third prize.
