LAND Research Lab's Journey
The first part of a series that will recap the journey into landscape research from 2017 until today.
In 2017, LAND began a new chapter by applying for a European Commission call on “Demonstrating innovative nature-based solutions in cities.” Our proposal, UNaLab – Urban Nature Lab, was selected for funding, marking our first research project alongside 27 international partners over five years. Since then, we have submitted applications for cutting-edge research and innovation in landscape planning and ecosystem services, resulting in exciting projects and the creation of the LAND Research Lab, the innovation and knowledge platform of the LAND Group.
To date, we have implemented three Horizon 2020-funded projects and are now advancing three new Horizon Europe initiatives that will guide us through 2028. These projects have helped the Lab cultivate strategic partnerships, develop novel methods, and create digital tools that drive climate-resilient development. Today, the Lab provides consultancy on urban and territorial transformation, applying international sustainability guidelines such as Nature-Capital-Accounting to local ecosystems and communities, and leveraging AI-powered tools to make sustainability measurable.

In 2025, as LAND celebrates its 35th anniversary, we will spotlight stories where nature and people come together to create liveable places. Above all, we want to recognise the exceptional network of partners—private companies, start-ups, civil organisations, public institutions, academia, and research institutes—who have shaped this journey. Throughout the year, we will host monthly interviews and events to share the knowledge we have built together and explore innovations paving the way for a nature-positive future.
