LAND signs Montreal Call to Action on Cities, Climate Research, and Governance
LAND has endorsed the Montreal Call to Action on Cities, Climate Research, and Governance, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to science-based climate action. This declaration was launched at the 2024 Innovate4Cities Conference, which took place in Quebec from September 10-12, co-hosted by the Global Covenant of Mayors and UN-Habitat.
The Montreal Call to Action aims to unite academia, government, civil society, and industry to accelerate climate initiatives at the intersection of urban development, climate science, and innovation. It emphasizes the need for enhanced, science-driven partnerships between local and national governments to foster ambitious climate collaboration at subnational levels, encompassing cities, towns, states, and regions.
By signing the Montreal Call to Action through its Canadian office and others, LAND pledges to:
- Explore the evolving interplay between research and decision-making, aiding national governments in their collaboration with subnational entities to drive climate action.
- Collaborate with urban stakeholders, including marginalized groups and Indigenous communities, through participatory processes to ensure inclusive and culturally sensitive climate action.
- Cultivate public-private partnerships, share intellectual capital, and invest in urban climate change solutions.
This commitment underscores LAND’s belief in the essential role of the private sector in facilitating the Nature-Positive transition and advancing climate solutions that prioritize regional and city-level initiatives while enhancing collaborative efforts across all levels of government. LAND also reaffirms its dedication to promoting sustainable urban development and supporting global progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
At the heart of this commitment is the collaboration between LAND Canada and LAND Research Lab, which plays a fundamental role in advancing the goals of the Montreal Call to Action. By focusing on urban resilience, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, engaging communities, employing data-driven solutions, advocating for policy change, and providing both local and global perspectives, the Lab supports the development of sustainable, resilient cities amidst climate change. Its efforts are vital for cultivating effective climate governance and ensuring that urban areas can thrive in a changing environment.
