Samara Green City responds to contemporary challenges by introducing Innovation with Nature. The project was awarded the first prize in an Open International Competition for the development of a master plan for the territory adjacent to the Samara Arena Stadium – one that may become one of the most significant locations in the city and the entire region. In team with Asadov Architects, Samara Technical University, MIC – Mobility in Chain, we developed a concept striving for a balanced and sustainable new Green City of Samara.

Our development is based on a holistic approach that recognises the importance of Samara’s cultural heritage, built environment, and unique natural diversity. Our experience encourages us to move towards innovation and sustainability, which have always distinguished our development strategies for urban regeneration. We create lively places for a sharing society. Our vision is to interpret the local characteristics and let them drive the configuration of the master plan. We recognise how the confluence of the Volga and Samara rivers generated the urban pattern of Samara and its historical city centre and we want to reconnect the historical centre with the surrounding green.

The development area, which is located between the built environment and the green hinterland, forms the hinge where nature and manmade intertwine. This innovative approach reintroduces nature into the Green City of Samara and contributes to its attractiveness.

The Master plan was based on the idea of cluster development of the territory with the introduction of multifunctional complexes and aimed at reaching the potential of the territory as a new agglomeration center of the Volga region. The territory transformation strategy focuses on three key concepts: ECOLOGY, ECONOMY and EMOTION. The idea of ECOLOGY and its principles are used to strengthen lost natural connections, which led to the fragmentation of the ecological city network. The concept of ECONOMY is introduced to boost economic aspects and create a sustainable economy. The concept of EMOTION aims to create a modern public space with various attractive facilities for recreation and leisure for residents of the Samara region and its guests.

The development of the territory includes the organisation of landscape communication with the Volga River, the creation of a network of green rays and a cluster approach to master planning. The critical challenges in elaborating the master plan were to develop the territory in harmony with nature and create a comfortable modern urban environment. The diversified landscape of the territory perfectly complements the natural diversity of Samara and the nearby areas.

The proposed project not only implies creating a new modern space around the Samara Arena stadium but also acts as a driver of the development of the entire region.
