As the Rheinisches Revier undergoes one of Europe’s largest territorial transformations, the Sophienhöhe emerges as a model for Nature-Positive regeneration. LAND’s vision connects ecological restoration, public access and regional development to shape a resilient landscape for future generations.

The Sophienhöhe is one of the most remarkable man-made landscapes in Europe. Rising from the overburden of the former Hambach open-cast mine, it stands today as the highest point of the otherwise flat Rhine mining region, offering a unique perspective on one of Germany’s most significant territorial transformations. As coal mining comes to an end, the Sophienhöhe has the potential to evolve from a post-industrial landscape into a new destination where nature, recreation and regional identity converge.
LAND’s masterplan develops a long-term vision for this transformation, positioning the Sophienhöhe as a living landscape that reconnects people with nature while supporting ecological restoration, environmental education and inclusive outdoor experiences. Rather than imposing new attractions, the project builds upon the site’s existing qualities, carefully enhancing its landscapes to create meaningful encounters with nature and the evolving story of the Rheinisches Revier.
By integrating landscape design, ecological enhancement and visitor experience into a coherent spatial strategy, Naturerlebnis Sophienhöhe establishes a replicable model for the regeneration of post-mining landscapes, turning the traces of industrial history into a resilient landscape for future generations.
