CINECA Campus Expansion: LAND’s competition proposal

LAND Italia participated in the competition for the expansion of the CINECA Campus in Casalecchio di Reno, Bologna, as landscape architect within a team with Open Project and DBA Group.

The project concerns the development of a new services building for the existing CINECA headquarters, contributing to the creation of a more integrated campus environment. The proposal responds to a complex urban context, positioned between the existing buildings, mobility infrastructures, and a wider green system.

The jury selected the proposal led by gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects for further development.

LAND contributed to a collaborative design process focused on the integration of architecture, landscape, and public space as a unified system. The proposal is based on continuity between built volumes, open spaces, and green connections, aiming to strengthen the identity of the campus while improving accessibility, environmental quality, and everyday usability.

The landscape strategy introduces new trees, accessible green areas, green terraces, and permeable surfaces, supporting both ecological performance and user wellbeing. A central green-blue infrastructure organises the open spaces and reinforces the relationship between the new building, the existing campus, and the surrounding urban fabric.

A key element of the proposal is the system of green terraces, conceived as extensions of the internal work and social spaces. Distributed across different levels, they offer outdoor areas for meeting, resting, and working, while creating a stronger visual and physical connection between architecture and nature.

The proposal also addresses sustainable mobility and urban regeneration through new pedestrian connections, a cycling network, improved parking areas with green permeable surfaces, and inclusive access throughout the campus.

Overall, the proposal combines landscape, architecture, and environmental performance into an integrated campus system, contributing to a more accessible, sustainable, and climate-conscious workplace.
