Regenerating Public Spaces through Nature and Social Life

In densely built-up urban areas threatened by soil consumption and hydrogeological risks, as the territory north of Milan, we aim to restore permeability and ecological connectivity, ensuring citizens a better quality of life through a Nature-Positive approach that sees landscape as a driver of urban development.

Redesigning squares and open spaces can transform the everyday life of a community. Paderno Dugnano and Lissone, two virtuous municipalities in the area north of Milan, are investing in the redevelopment of their symbolic public spaces, turning them into places of connection, sport, and social interaction.

Paderno Dugnano and its “stanza verde all’aperto”

From textile factory to community space. The new face of Piazza della Divina Commedia is the first step in the PadernoGreen project, which sees us working alongside the Municipality of Paderno Dugnano on a widespread regeneration plan aimed at rethinking the open spaces of the Urban Retail District.

Innovatively designed tree canopies punctuate a high-quality public space that fosters social interaction and is designed for children’s play, study, and shared moments.

A symbolic and connective place—socially and culturally—for the community, extending to the nearby Piazza della Resistenza, it restores value to the non-built and enhances the public functions of the Library, the Cultural Center, and all neighborhood services.

An identity model for a future Paderno that is more connected and synergic.

Piazzale degli Umiliati in Lissone

A project focused on reclaiming an important urban public space, to be lived every day thanks to the optimization of parking and weekly market areas, the introduction of extensive green zones, and the renewal of the piazza’s paving to encourage sports and leisure activities.

This rethinking is made even more sustainable through innovative rainwater drainage solutions, easily replicable across the territory.

The intervention aims to redesign this 2-hectare asphalted area into a new urban hub: a vibrant, multifunctional, and attractive public space used daily—not only during the weekly market or local festivities—promoting a better quality of life through nature.

The redistribution of market stalls is accompanied by the creation of 10,000 m² of new pedestrian spaces for play and sport and 3,500 m² of green areas, shaded by the planting of 128 new trees.

At the heart of the project is a “Taglio Verde (Green Cut)”, a continuous landscaped strip crossing Piazzale degli Umiliati that will create a place for community and social interaction, with areas dedicated to outdoor sports and soft mobility pathways.

Climate resilience will be ensured through innovative systems for rainwater storage and retention, designed to reduce peak discharges into the sewer network. The landscape intervention will be complemented by the construction of a new multifunctional pavilion.

With this new identity, the squares in Paderno Dugnano and Lissone will become virtuous and forward-looking models, capable of combining environmental stewardship, hydrogeological resilience, and the enhancement of public space for a better quality of urban life.
