Shaping Soundscapes and Communities: The Noise Barrier in Duisburg Wedau
Duisburg's Green Wall: Transforming Noise into Opportunity
In Duisburg Wedau, a remarkable project is reshaping the urban landscape—a towering green wall that not only quiets the relentless hum of railway tracks but also breathes life into the city. Stretching an astonishing 2.4 kilometers, this noise barrier is more than just infrastructure; it’s a celebration of community, ecology, and innovation. At LAND, we’re proud to be part of this journey, contributing our expertise to create a space where nature and urban life thrive together.

From Barrier to Gateway
Imagine standing at the base of this structure, surrounded by vibrant greenery that shifts with the seasons, mirroring the rhythms of nature. This is the Noise Barrier Duisburg Wedau, a project designed to transform the concept of a noise wall into an integral part of the community.
Rising to 16 meters at its peak, the wall is more than a sound shield. It’s a green corridor, connecting neighborhoods and creating new opportunities for exploration. The pathways, accessible to all, wind gently through lush greenery, inviting walkers, cyclists, and adventurers to ascend. For those seeking a shortcut, a striking steel tower with open staircases offers panoramic terraces at multiple levels, culminating in a rooftop that delivers sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.

A Vision for Connection
This project is not just about blocking noise—it’s about opening possibilities. Located on a 90-hectare redevelopment of a former marshalling yard, the wall bridges the urban divide between Neudorf, Bissingheim, and Wedau, linking them to the Sechs-Seen-Platte recreational area and the Wedau sports forest. These connections create a vibrant corridor of leisure and mobility for residents of the future neighborhoods and beyond.
The project goes beyond mere aesthetics. With 13,000 climbing plants, the wall transforms into a vibrant, living structure. Its lush greenery not only enhances the visual appeal of the space but also functions as a natural air filter, improving local air quality and fostering habitats for wildlife. By thoughtfully integrating native plant species, the design minimizes maintenance while boosting biodiversity.
Moreover, the wall serves as a crucial habitat for protected species. The area is designed to support a variety of flora and fauna, acting as a key component of a biotope network. Specifically, the wall has been tailored to provide a sanctuary for sand lizards, which will be carefully relocated from the surrounding environment.
The habitats are composed of stone and gravel surfaces, sand mounds, specialized meadow plants, and herbaceous vegetation, creating a diverse and supportive environment. Additional features, such as carefully placed deadwood piles, enrich the ecosystem. Together, these elements offer basking spots, overwintering sites, hiding places, egg-laying areas, and resting zones, ensuring the sand lizards thrive within this thoughtfully designed landscape.

Green Innovation at Scale
The barrier’s design embodies LAND’s mission to rethink infrastructure. Supported by an innovative compressed earth Terramesh system, the wall showcases how local resources can be used sustainably, reducing the environmental footprint of construction. The integration of pathways into the topography results in a series of green steps that blend seamlessly with the surrounding hills. This approach not only minimizes disruption but also creates a harmonious relationship between the built and natural environments.
The project also highlights how infrastructure can serve dual purposes. While it mitigates noise, it simultaneously provides a new recreational space, bringing people together in an environment designed for connection, relaxation, and discovery.

A Collaborative Effort
What makes the Duisburg Wedau project particularly inspiring is the spirit of collaboration that drives it. Together with GEBAG, local engineering firms, and specialized partners, LAND is helping turn an ambitious idea into reality. The involvement of diverse stakeholders ensures the project reflects the needs of the community while setting a new standard for ecological and urban design.
This partnership approach is central to LAND’s philosophy of collaborating, exploring, and cultivating. By bringing together expertise across disciplines, the project demonstrates how collective creativity can redefine the possibilities of urban infrastructure.

A Future Unfolding
As construction continues, the noise barrier is already leaving its mark—not just on the landscape, but also on the identity of Duisburg Wedau. It symbolizes a new era of urban development where infrastructure doesn’t divide but unites, where design serves people and nature alike.
For residents, the benefits are clear: a quieter environment, better connectivity, and access to vibrant green spaces that enhance quality of life. For the city, it’s a bold statement about the kind of future it’s building—one where innovation meets sustainability.
