The Gavoglio barrack is located in the Lagaccio District, one of Genova’s most densely built and socially vulnerable neighbourhoods. The project results in a new park for the community, opening the inaccessible industrial compounds and strengthening the connection with the upper part of the district, till Parco dei Forti, a protected natural area on the hills. It offers new green areas, playgrounds, sport facilities and aggregation spaces for the citizens.
The Municipality of Genova identified in the Gavoglio Park a lighthouse project to spread innovative solutions inspired by nature to tackle climate change effects in Mediterranean cities, which, according to recent reports, will suffer mostly from the climate transition. Strategically planned urban nature provides resilience in a broader way: ecosystem resilience to climate change implies resilience to social conflicts, economic damages and financial uncertainty.
UNaLab (Urban Nature Labs) is a Horizon 2020-financed project joining 29 public and private partners from all over Europe to develop more innovative, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable local societies through nature-based innovation developed within a co-creation process.
