Elsa-Brändström-Realschule, Rheine
Germany
The existing secondary school named after Elsa Brändström in Rheine, near Cologne, is to be expanded to six trains and rebuilt on the site north of the Emsland Stadium. Connected by a continuous “play and sports belt” along the stadium circuit, the school and sports hall develop an urban unit, based on the competition design won by LAND Germany and JSWD Architekten.

With the completely new construction of the Elsa-Brändström-Realschule and the associated sports hall on the approx. 21,677 m² site in Rheine, a building is to be created that meets the modern requirements of a significantly changed everyday school and learning environment.
The classrooms, arranged in a ribbon-like manner along the outer façade, encompass the three attractive open atriums provided with learning islands and areas for lingering. The result is a flexible, coherent “learning landscape”.
The newly designed project space is characterised by its versatility, which can be experienced in the playful learning with a greening of the space. An increased level of greenery is not only valuable for aesthetic reasons, but also has positive consequences for rainwater infiltration and promotes biodiversity. A large variety of habitats is created, while a dense tree population also reduces the amount of pollutants entering the site.
A playful zoning and arrangement of differentiated subspaces allows for versatile and multifunctional use and is reflected in the design language through a variety of forms. In this way, a ‘school for joint learning’ will be realised.
