Waldhotel Health & Medical Excellence, Bürgenstock

Switzerland

Located at 850 meters above sea level in the canton of Nidwalden, Waldhotel Health & Medical Excellence is set within a subalpine and lakeside landscape between the Alps and mountain prairies—a region celebrated as a holiday and spa destination since 1872. Building on this rich historical context, the project’s landscape design respects and enhances the natural terrain by incorporating alpine grasslands, coniferous and deciduous woodlands, and open clearings shaped by local pasturing activities.

Drawing inspiration from the renowned Bürgenstock area, the design mirrors the surrounding vast meadows, forests, and clearings through a series of carefully planned elements. Green courtyards, filtering vegetation along the facades, terraces, and vegetated exterior walls gently integrate the hotel into its characteristic landscape.

After a detailed inventory of the local environment, the design was tailored to capture the intrinsic landscape characters: the lower forest forms a natural enclosure for the building ensemble, while thematic tree groups in the central courtyard evoke the essence of the surrounding woods. Green roofs reproduce the appearance of flower meadows and open clearings, and the internal courtyards feature miniature gardens that reflect the complexity of Swiss landscapes—embodying forests, meadows, and rocky outcrops to create a true naturaminiatura that offers a healing, restorative space.

Developed in collaboration with Matteo Thun & Partners, the approach ensures seamless integration with nature, transforming the site into a destination of environmental and medical excellence. This project exemplifies a sensitive and innovative approach to landscape architecture, reinforcing the vital connection between health, nature, and sustainability. By harmonizing with local ecological patterns and the historic identity of the region, Waldhotel Health & Medical Excellence sets a benchmark for wellness resorts, where landscape, architecture, and medical care converge to create an immersive, healing experience deeply rooted in the Swiss Alps.
