The Masterplan for Mykolaiv, developed within the #UN4UkrainianCities initiative, defines a sustainable vision for the city’s reconstruction through landscape enhancement, reconnecting communities to nature, activating urban polarities, and regenerating ecological and social systems starting from the rivers.

The Masterplan for the reconstruction and urban regeneration of the city of Mykolaiv, part of the #UN4UkrainainCities project led by UNECE and One Works Foundation, defines a sustainable vision for the city through the enhancement of the landscape. Recognizing the vocation of a place results in different benefits for the community development. The vision for Mykolaiv’s landscapes and environment aims to create a dense green-blue network, starting from the rivers to connect different poles of Mykolaiv’s territory and enhance the quality of life.

To achieve this vision, five main goals are defined:

  1. Bring the Bug River to the centre of the green and social network of the city.
  2. Foster biodiversity.
  3. Respect and enhance the ecological network.
  4. Bring people closer to nature.
  5. Mitigate the effects of the climate crisis.

The Southern Bug and Ingul rivers become the central elements of this green and blue network, generating new connections through waterfront enhancements and green axes. The strategy culminates in the Innovation District, a pilot project that exemplifies how landscape becomes a driver of transformation, bringing ecological, social, and cultural value back to the city and its people.

The Masterplan outlines strategic guidelines to enhance and protect Mykolaiv’s open spaces—urban and natural. It envisions a new green grid connecting the city through ecological corridors and activated polarities. The Innovation District demonstrates this vision, integrating green spaces and services to balance nature and urban life. Starting from the enhancement of existing natural assets, the plan gives back accessible, quality spaces to citizens, making landscape a foundational component of reconstruction.
