The Klimaschutzsiedlung Wohnen am Wald project in Düsseldorf, winner of the NRW Landespreis 2017 for Architecture, Housing, and Urban Development, integrates high-quality open spaces with residential architecture. Defined by clear zoning between private and communal areas, the landscape enhances urban living through green buffers, shared recreational spaces, and climate-conscious design solutions fostering social interaction and biodiversity.

The project establishes a balanced relationship between private gardens and communal areas, creating a cohesive living environment. The inner courtyard is divided into distinct spaces, each offering unique qualities to enhance both privacy and interaction. The ground-floor gardens sit atop the underground parking, maximizing land efficiency while maintaining a natural atmosphere.

At the heart of the complex, the central communal area, “le cœur”, functions as a social hub, providing space for recreational activities, a playground, and shared gathering areas. A green “Passe-Partout” frame encircles the space, ensuring a natural transition between private and communal domains while reinforcing the landscape’s ecological role.

This design approach promotes sustainability, social well-being, and urban resilience, offering a model for integrating green infrastructure within residential developments.

The landscape strategy behind Wohnen am Wald prioritizes functional green spaces that enhance community living and environmental performance. By defining clear spatial boundaries and incorporating multi-purpose green areas, the project fosters a harmonious connection between residents and nature.

The integration of shared amenities and green buffers ensures a sustainable and inclusive urban living model, recognized with the NRW Landespreis 2017 for Architecture, Housing, and Urban Development. This project serves as an exemplary case of thoughtful landscape design in contemporary residential planning.
