The Ideas Study for Basel East (Ideenstudie Stadtraum Basel Ost) offers an overarching development vision for transforming the 180 ha area into a future-oriented, sustainable, social, and innovative neighbourhood, starting from the landscape.

Basel Ost, situated in the eastern part of Basel, Switzerland, serves as a buffer zone among several districts and neighbouring regions. Between the Rhine, Badischer Bahnhof and Riehen, it is one of Basel’s last major development areas. The area around the historic Allmende and the Hirzbaden neighbourhood currently has a highly fragmented typological character and is degenerating into a storage area for urban infrastructure.

Characterized by railway lines and diverse settlements such as Landauer, Rheinacker, and Bäumlihof, the area’s development aims to blend urban and landscape features into a distinct “urban landscape,” accommodating over 1000 residential units and diverse uses.

The project’s core objective is to create an integrated zone that not onlyacts as a suburb but also connects surrounding areas, emphasising collective, inclusive, and intensive open space utilization.

It involves four key strategies:

  • “from blue to blue,” focusing on ecological continuity and designing new ecological corridors;
  • “regenerative agriculture,” integrating permaculture and circular economy principles into the existing production landscape;
  • “nature to nature,” concentrating on holistic urban development and multifunctional spaces;
  • “opening to the Rhine,” aiming for open spaces and residential development that respect Basel’s green areas.

The proposed design amalgamates tradition with innovation, fostering urban investments and community engagement around the new Baumlihof HUB, featuring educational institutions and community gardens. It envisions mixed-use and residential developments along the Rhine, including a public Rhine Park promoting relaxation, multifunctionality, and enhanced biodiversity.
