Inaugurated the Sulbiate-Aicurzio Water Park with BrianzAcque
A cutting-edge blue-green infrastructure combining climate resilience and social usability. A large urban park that integrates stormwater management with social life in green spaces, designed by LAND Italia and J+S S.p.A. for BrianzAcque. The Sulbiate-Aicurzio Water Park combines climate resilience with new opportunities for enjoying Nature.
A hydraulic protection landscape that connects two municipalities to counter extreme weather events, while also fostering social interaction and outdoor recreation. A park for everyone, it embodies the shared commitment with local administrations to provide ecosystem benefits to citizens, while respecting the identity of the place.
Water. Soil. Greenery. People. These are the guiding principles that shaped the Sulbiate-Aicurzio Water Park, the result of collaboration between BrianzAcque, LAND Italia, J+S S.p.A. and the administrations of the two municipalities involved. A blue-green infrastructure spanning over 5 hectares—the largest in Brianza—where sustainability intertwines with new forms of social interaction and culture.
Launched in 2022, the project was inspired by the model of the Arcore Water Park and involved strengthening the existing system of detention basins and introducing a new complementary reservoir. Through reshaping the sections, increasing capacity and depth, and implementing an improved drainage system, the intervention increased stormwater storage capacity from 20,000 m³ to 36,100 m³. Entirely integrated into Nature, the system helps prevent and contain flooding along Provincial Road 177.
“The Sulbiate-Aicurzio Water Park project is fully aligned with climate adaptation strategies that place water at the center of action, within a broader urban regeneration process,” said Andreas Kipar, CEO of LAND.
“We wanted to include the inauguration of the Sulbiate-Aicurzio Water Park in the Ville Aperte in Brianza program because we are convinced it represents a true ‘work of delight,’” added Enrico Boerci, President and MD of BrianzAcque. “It is a concrete example of how engineering innovation can engage with nature and bring value back to the territory. The project is the outcome of a virtuous collaboration: an advanced hydraulic infrastructure designed to protect the community from flood risks, while also becoming a place for gathering, leisure, and sustainability education. Conceived to address climate challenges, it fully reflects BrianzAcque’s vision: useful, beautiful, and accessible works that improve citizens’ quality of life and strengthen their bond with the environment they live in.”
Within the park’s “green sea,” a bio-lake and an adjoining phytodepuration area—covering 1,100 m² and 275 m² respectively—support the recirculation and supply system, drawing from the first aquifer during dry months. Hygrophilous plants and selected gravels further contribute to the natural purification of the water resource. The permanent water basin will remain active even during dry periods, animated by fountains and small cascades that serve ornamental, circulation, and re-oxygenation functions.
Innovative water management goes hand in hand with the regeneration of the surrounding natural system, creating a new identity in harmony with the context. Benches, paths, rest areas, children’s water play areas, cycling and pedestrian routes, and vegetation echoing the Brianza agricultural landscape contribute to enhancing the environment, ensuring access to nature and integrating hydraulic technologies into the local ecosystem.
The park offers multipurpose, easily accessible and usable spaces. Integrated with pre-existing and historically significant paths, these areas place the community at the center, encouraging social interaction, conviviality, and the chance to learn while having fun through educational installations, water games, and picnic spots. The result is an urban park open to all, enhancing the vocation of the site by offering opportunities for sharing, greenery, and sustainability education.
Completed last May, the Sulbiate-Aicurzio Water Park was officially opened to the public on the afternoon of Saturday, September 20, as part of the “Ville Aperte in Brianza” program. The inauguration was attended, among others, by the Mayors of Sulbiate and Aicurzio, Carla Alfonsa Della Torre and Matteo Baraggia, the President of the Province of Monza-Brianza, Luca Santambrogio, the President and MD of BrianzAcque, Enrico Boerci, and the directors of LAND Italia, Shirly Mantin and Matteo Pedaso.
