Measuring the Value of Nature Over Time: Boschi E.ON on Renewable Matter
Renewable Matter covers the new phase of Boschi E.ON, the forestation project launched in 2011, where LAND Italia applies Natural Capital Accounting and the Ecoverse platform to twenty forests, measuring their ecosystem benefits and estimating how they could evolve through to 2050.
Planting trees is only the first step. But how do we understand what a forest gives back to its territory over time?
In the article “Boschi E.ON, misurare il valore della natura nel tempo” (E.ON Forests, measuring the value of nature over time), published on Renewable Matter on 17 October 2026, the new phase of the collaboration between E.ON Italia and LAND Italia takes centre stage. Since 2011, Boschi E.ON has created 70 forest areas and planted over 150,000 trees across Italy. Today, the project also looks at quantifying Natural Capital and it’s part of a wider path towards a Nature-Positive Future.
Through Natural Capital Accounting and digital landscape modelling, a sample of 20 forests was analysed from riparian woodlands to Mediterranean habitats and urban Tiny Forests. Beyond CO₂ storage, the indicators include biodiversity potential, oxygen production, PM2.5 removal, shading and reduced surface runoff. Projections to 2050 estimate that these 20 sites could store 63,432 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent: potential benefits, not results already achieved. Part of the data can be explored through Ecoverse, LAND’s Nature Intelligence platform.
For LAND, forests are living infrastructure that supports biodiversity, climate resilience and the relationship between communities and territory. And to make this role count in decisions, it has to be measurable.
Because planting a forest is where the story begins: measuring its value over time is how we learn to protect it.
