Piazza Quasimodo finally regains its space
The reclamation of public space begins in the heart of Milan’s historic center: from the iconic place inspired by Salvatore Quasimodo, after 1.5 years of works during which 2,700 sqm of asphalt were removed. Today, the square welcomes a 1,000 sqm pedestrian island, framed by 15 trees (Liquidambar styraciflua) and natural stone paving.
Together with Milan Deputy Mayor Anna Scavuzzo, Councillors Elena Grandi and Arianna Censi, President of Municipality 1 Mattia Abdu Ismail, and Francesco Rovere from AXA Investment Managers, we returned Piazza Quasimodo to the city community. The square, part of the Vetra Building public spaces regeneration, is one of the elements of the “Kilometer of Nature and Culture” connecting Piazza Duomo to the Darsena, writing a new chapter in urban regeneration.
Urban regeneration, alongside greenery and mobility, converges toward a common goal: improving the quality of life for Milanese citizens, starting with the students of the Cattaneo Institute and the Brera Art High School, present at the inauguration, who experience the square every day.
“Today we inaugurate a new step toward reclaiming public space in Milan’s historic center”, said Andreas Kipar. “By rethinking streets, squares, and green corridors, freeing public space through urban soil permeability allows us to reactivate and reconnect the urban fabric of the city center, restoring overall value to spaces that are often fragmented and poorly connected. Piazza Quasimodo thus assumes a new, lively, and sustainable identity, enriching the urban walk that links the Duomo directly to the Darsena and making the historic center increasingly human-centered.”

Kipar concluded his speech by quoting one of Salvatore Quasimodo’s most famous poems:“Each one stands alone on the heart of the earth / pierced by a ray of sun: / and suddenly it is evening.”
From the ‘ray of sun’ to the Green Rays, the words of the Nobel Prize in Literature resonate and guide us in our goal of improving the quality of life for Milanese citizens through permeability and accessibility, in the spirit of virtuous collaboration between public and private sectors.
