Parco Basaglia inaugurated in Gorizia: restoring a historic landscape across borders

Yesterday marked the inauguration of Parco Basaglia – Functional Lot 1 in Gorizia (Italy), a project to which LAND Italia actively contributed, restoring the park’s historical identity while opening it toward a broader cross-border landscape with Slovenia.

Developed in line with the Masterplan, the intervention focuses on the regeneration of the early 20th-century design by architect Baresi. At the heart of the project lies the Parco Storico, once part of the psychiatric hospital associated with the pivotal figure of Franco Basaglia, whose ideas revolutionized the understanding of mental health. Here, existing paths have been carefully recovered using natural materials, while the vegetation has been restructured, removing invasive growth and introducing new plantings to enhance seasonal variation and spatial clarity.

A second key theme is the “Parco di Sconfine”, where the park extends toward Slovenia. In this area, the boundary is reinterpreted as a space of connection: barriers have been removed, new paths reintroduced, and a continuous row of trees and wildflower meadows define a shared, evolving landscape between the two countries.

The project also addresses accessibility and infrastructure through a clear hierarchy of permeable paths, combining draining concrete for main routes with softer natural surfaces for slower mobility.

With the planting of 92 new trees and the careful restoration of its spatial and ecological structure, Parco Basaglia is now a renewed public landscape, one that preserves memory while fostering new forms of use and connection.

Through its contribution, LAND Italia reinforces its commitment to working with complex landscapes where heritage, nature, and contemporary life intersect.
