Learning and Growing in Nature: Shaping Educational Landscapes for the Future

At LAND, we believe schools should be dynamic ecosystems where learning, nature, and community converge. Our projects in the educational sector vividly illustrate how thoughtful landscape design can transform a school environment into a space that nurtures creativity, well-being, and sustainable growth.

In Düsseldorf, the newly inaugurated Thomas Edison Realschule sets a benchmark for future-ready campuses, offering an environment where students engage with nature as an integral part of their education. In collaboration with pbs architekten Planungsgesellschaft mbH, Knappmann Rheinland GmbH & Co. KG, and IPM – Immobilien Projekt Management Düsseldorf, the design by LAND Germanyintegrates expansive green spaces with micro-habitats, a biodiversity roof, and tree-lined courtyards that serve as interactive outdoor classrooms and recreational zones. Modern sports facilities and bicycle parking further reinforce Düsseldorf’s commitment to resilient, future-oriented urban living.

Across the border in Switzerland, the competition-winning design by LAND Suisse and Campana Hermann Pisoni Architects for the new Biasca Cantonal School Campus is guided by a similar vision. The project features a capillary nature embracing both education and community, creating inspiring areas that address social needs and promote a sustainable, livable future. The intervention proposes 9,200 m² of accessible green areas, introduces 196 new trees, and incorporates permeable surfaces along with a sustainable water management strategy—featuring 4,700 m² of green roofs and 155 m² of rain gardens. At its heart lies an “Arboretum of Culture”, forming a vibrant green corridor that reconnects the campus, supports multifunctional use, and reinforces ecological, social, and cultural ties.
