Jane's Walk: a chance to discover Cassarate River Park

Jane’s Walks are free urban walks organized by volunteers on the first weekend of May in hundreds of cities around the world.

Jane’s Walks are free urban walks organized by volunteers on the first weekend of May in hundreds of cities around the world.

The concept refers to the ideas of Jane Jacobs, a North American activist who emphasized observing everyday life and involving residents in urban discussions.

As part of the Jane’s Walk program, which is always free and open to everyone, this year the Swiss Pedestrian Mobility Association, Ticino Section, has asked LAND to collaborate in organizing a series of thematic walks focused on enhancing the value of water in the urban environment, as a common thread connecting the walks proposed by the regional group.

Martina Conti, Director at LAND Suisse, will guide the walk of 3.5 km, starting at the Piano Stampa bus stop at 3:00 PM, the route follows the Cassarate River, weaving together nature, sport, and everyday urban life.

Highlights include a panoramic view of the Parco dello Sport al Maglio, a rainwater biotope with its small ecosystem, lively park squares, and the newly accessible riverfront at Piazza sul fiume. The walk concludes at Casetta Amélie in the Parco di Pregassona, offering a convivial moment to relax and reflect on the city, its water, and its community.

The aim of this walk is to showcase how watercourses can Reconnect People with Nature better than any other infrastructure, as they are infrastructure themselves.

You can learn more about Jane’s Walk on its website, where you’ll also find a podcast and an overview of what is behind these initiatives: principles that support the idea that urban life and public space are best understood by walking, observing, talking, and listening to one another, making everyday places and people central to how we shape communities and our cities.
