A Landscape for Life: Concept Masterplan for Mykolaiv

LAND participates in the UNECE's UN4UkrainianCities initiative and has presented the landscape and urban regeneration plan for Mykolaiv during an event at Cascina Triulza, organised by the Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Finance for Infrastructure and Smart Cities (ExSUF), established by UNECE and LIUC - Cattaneo University, in cooperation with One Works Foundation.

“The concept masterplan for Mykolaiv embodies our shared commitment to creating a ‘human landscape’ – a landscape that lives within us and actively shapes our daily lives,” said Andreas Kipar during the event, attended by Mykolaiv’s mayor, Oleksandr Senkevych.

At the heart of the Mykolaiv master plan is revitalising the Southern Bug River, a vital natural and economic resource for the city. Our proposal envisions a dense, interconnected green-blue infrastructure, starting from the riverbanks and extending throughout the city. This new ecological network will reclaim waterfront spaces for the community and improve the city’s climate resilience, blending nature into urban life.

Mykolaiv’s transformation into a Nature-Positive City will integrate flexible urban landscapes with environmental sustainability. Kipar explains, “This is about nurturing a future based on the city’s ‘soft factors’ – from embracing a Nature-Positive mindset to fostering urban spaces that merge culture with nature.”

The masterplan also introduces Freedom Garden Boulevard, a 5-kilometre green space featuring trees from across Europe, to serve as a symbol of peace and unity. The Nature-Positive Innovation District will mirror successful models like Milan’s MIND, illustrating how sustainable design can become a core part of city landscapes.

Our approach to Mykolaiv is rooted in rethinking urban landscapes with a strong focus on local identity and natural elements. By repositioning nature as central to urban planning, Mykolaiv can look forward to a future where resilience and sustainability are tangible elements of city life.
