Bundesasylzentrum Buosingen: LAND Suisse’s competition proposal

LAND Suisse participated in the competition for the new Federal Asylum Centre (BAZoV) in Buosingen, in the municipality of Arth (Canton Schwyz), as landscape architect within the interdisciplinary team led by Itten+Brechbühl AG.

The competition, organized by the Swiss Confederation (BBL/SEM), aimed to develop a project for a 170-place facility within a highly sensitive landscape context at the edge of the BLN area “Vierwaldstättersee mit Kernwald, Bürgenstock und Rigi.”

The proposal by Ruprecht Architekten GmbH, Zurich, was selected for further development.

LAND Suisse contributed to a collaborative design process together with Itten+Brechbühl AG, WaltGalmarini AG, HKG Engineering AG and Anima Engineering AG. The team developed a proposal based on a careful integration into the existing landscape, taking inspiration from local settlement patterns and preserving key natural elements such as existing vegetation, hedgerows, and the Chlausenbach stream as an ecological backbone and wildlife corridor.

The project translates these principles into a spatial system of dispersed volumes and differentiated open spaces, creating a sequence of outdoor environments that support everyday life. The landscape concept balances areas for community, activity, and retreat, while ensuring clear orientation, accessibility, and a sense of safety and dignity for residents.

A strong emphasis was placed on ecological continuity, with nature-based water management strategies, reduced sealed surfaces, and targeted biodiversity enhancements. The proposal also explored circular construction principles, combining modular timber structures with reversible systems to reduce resource consumption, allow future adaptability, and minimize the project’s environmental footprint.
