Located in the heart of Düsseldorf, the redesigned Schlüterstraße school campus sets a benchmark for sustainable and innovative outdoor spaces, with nature and education going hand in hand. In the spirit of creating a “green classroom”, school grounds are transformed into a vibrant, multifunctional landscape where learning, recreation, and sustainability seamlessly converge.

At the center of the new design is an innovative sports area featuring a state-of-the-art soccer court integrated with a basketball field, surrounded by a multi-tiered seating area for outdoor teaching. The outdoor space also includes expansive facilities for bicycle parking, complete with covered areas to promote accessibility, eco-friendly mobility and sustainable transportation choices.

A thoughtfully designed green framework weaves throughout the campus, integrating mature trees with new plantings and diverse micro-habitats for insects and small animals. These green elements and biotopes not only create opportunities for relaxation and ecological education but also improve rainwater absorption, enhance biodiversity, and mitigate air pollution. The campus embodies the concept of a “living landscape,” blending education and environmental stewardship.

The site’s layout emphasizes a playful zoning strategy, offering distinct areas for sports, outdoor classes, and functional uses. These spaces are designed with fluid forms that encourage exploration, creativity, and social interaction. Further enriching the campus are four tiered courtyards and a biodiverse green roof, which add unique spatial character and ecological value.

Sustainability lies at the core of the project. From the choice of materials to the focus on expanding green spaces, every element is designed to contribute to a better urban environment. As the project evolves, each planted tree and green area will continue to enhance the school’s surroundings and Düsseldorf’s urban climate long into the future.

In transforming the Schlüterstraße campus, this initiative not only reimagines the role of outdoor spaces in education but also delivers a model for green, forward-thinking urban design.
