SHIFT launched in Rome: a collaborative platform for the ecological transition

On March 26, 2026, SHIFT – Sustainability Hub for Innovation and Future Territories was officially launched in Rome, introducing a new collaborative platform designed to address the challenges of the ecological transition through an integrated and systemic approach.

Promoted by Gruppo CAP, SHIFT brings together stakeholders from industry, research, and public governance to foster dialogue, align expertise, and develop concrete solutions across sectors. The initiative aims to move beyond fragmented, sector-based approaches by building synergies between different value chains and competencies.

At its core, SHIFT positions environmental infrastructures, including water, energy, and waste systems, as strategic assets capable of driving innovation, competitiveness, and long-term resilience for territories.

A shared framework for transformation

The platform is structured around three main areas of focus:

  • Climate transition, with particular attention to Nature-Based Solutions and energy neutrality pathways
  • Bioeconomy, promoting resource reuse and the valorization of organic materials
  • Integration of water, energy, and waste systems, to enable more efficient and circular infrastructure management

A key milestone of the launch was the presentation of SHIFT’s first Policy Brief, which explores the integration between water services and energy systems. The document highlights the potential of wastewater networks as a source of recoverable thermal energy, opening new perspectives for urban heating systems and more efficient resource use.

A multi-stakeholder alliance

SHIFT brings together a broad network of public and private actors, including Utilitalia, Fondazione Utilitatis, Acqua Pubblica Europea, A2A Calore e Servizi, ALA, Gruppo CAP, Isle Utilities, Tecno Habitat, Politecnico di Milano, Rice House, ARS Ambiente and Ascolto Attivo, among others.

Through this alliance, the platform aims to become a permanent space for exchange and co-design, capable of supporting scalable and long-term solutions for the ecological transition.

LAND’s contribution

LAND is also part of the SHIFT network, contributing to the discussion on the role of nature within transformation processes and the development of integrated approaches to territorial development.

During the event, Matteo Pedaso, Managing Director of LAND Italia, participated in a panel focused on policy perspectives for a feasible climate and ecological transition, highlighting the importance of combining strategic vision, performance monitoring, and collaboration across different actors.

Towards a systemic approach

The launch of SHIFT marks an important step towards a more collaborative and systemic approach to the transformation of territories. By connecting expertise, infrastructures, and governance models, the platform aims to support a transition that is not only environmental, but also economic and social.
