Diversity, Nature and Hope – Stresstest, Architecture Biennale Venezia 2025

In his contribution for the German Pavillion exhibition catalogue, Andreas Kipar reflects on the urgent need to confront the climate crisis with Nature-based strategies. Landscape architects have the responsibility to move beyond traditional solutions, and build broad alliances for resilient and liveable cities.

The latest IPCC analyses confirm the unprecedented pace of climate change, with January 2025 recorded as the warmest on record.

In the German pavilion at the Architecture Biennale 2025 in Venice, the curatorial team of Nicola Borgmann, Elisabeth Endres, Gabriele G. Kiefer and Daniele Santucci is therefore not depicting a dystopia, but a realistic scenario that we are facing, whose appropriate title is ‘Stress Test’.

Andreas Kipar contributed to the exhibition catalogue by highlighting the role of landscape architecture in delivering practical responses: from tree planting and water management to heat adaptation and resilient urban planning. He calls for stronger commitments against greenwashing, urging recognition of ecosystem services as long-term investments in health, productivity, and quality of life.

Central to his message is the need for shared responsibility, from civil society to private actors—supported by an ecological obligation of property. Nature, he argues, is both fragile and powerful: vulnerable to human impact yet a model of diversity, coexistence, and evolution. By embracing this vision, cities can move away from empty promises and toward living landscapes that prioritise quality of life. For landscape architects, this means new design tools, new aesthetics, and renewed hope.
