The project addresses the need to provide an outdoor space dedicated to open-air work and rest at the headquarters of Munich RE in Milan.

This terrace is designed as a place in continuous transformation, aligning with Milan’s urban landscape ethos. The project envisions a flexible and dynamic space characterized by varying shades and colours that change with the seasons.

A vital feature of the terrace is a mobile system of wooden modules that can be joined or separated. The wheels on these modules allow effortless movement, enabling different configurations and scenarios to be created effortlessly.

Vegetation plays a significant role in enhancing the terrace. Various flexible, lightweight, and easily transportable pots in different sizes and colours host an array of plants. These include small trees, shrubs, grasses, and blooming flowers, which create a connection with the surrounding landscape. The varying heights of the plants provide views of the city while also ensuring privacy for users. The selection of plants guarantees seasonal blooms, ensuring the terrace remains vibrant and inviting throughout the year.

Positive Impacts of Vegetation on the Terrace:

  • Improved Air Quality: The plants help purify the air by absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen, creating a healthier environment for employees.
  • Enhanced Aesthetics: The changing colours and textures of the plants add visual appeal and create a relaxing atmosphere conducive to both work and relaxation.
  • Temperature Regulation: Vegetation helps cool the terrace by providing shade and through the natural process of transpiration, making the outdoor space more comfortable during warm months.
  • Biodiversity: The diverse plant species support urban biodiversity by attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
  • Stress Reduction: Greenery has been shown to reduce stress and improve mental well-being, making the terrace ideal for taking breaks and recharging.
  • Acoustic Benefits: Plants can help absorb sound, reduce noise pollution from the urban environment, and create a quieter, more peaceful space.

Overall, the integration of flexible vegetation on the terrace enhances its aesthetic appeal and provides significant environmental and health benefits, aligning with the company’s commitment to sustainability and employee well-being.
