LAND Austria and Albert Wimmer Architects Awarded 4th Place in Münster Model Quarter Competition

Located across from Stadthafen 1 and 2 along the Dortmund-Ems Canal in the German city of Münster, this 12-hectare project focuses on “Leben am Wasser,” (Life by the Water) combining urban spaces with a sustainable green environment. Conceived by Albert Wimmer ZT GmbH with LAND Austria called “Vis-a-Vis, Leben am Uferpark und Hafen,” the proposal is a unique blend of a mixed residential quarter and small-scale businesses, creating a vibrant, green neighbourhood that positively impacts the entire Münsterland region. The design emphasizes human-scale urban planning, resulting in a lively local environment finely tuned with its surroundings.

A highlight is the 3-hectare Uferpark (river park), a generous recreational space that enhances Münster’s urban green areas and the Dortmund-Ems Canal. The park offers new leisure opportunities, with green corridors connecting nearby neighbourhoods and features such as viewing platforms, nature playgrounds, and sports areas.

The project’s climate-resilient approach is a key feature, incorporating nature-based solutions and blue-green infrastructure. This creates a resilient environment that supports social-ecological transformation. The dense network of open spaces ensures high-quality living environments and functional diversity, fostering inclusivity for all residents.

Active green networking extends beyond the quarter, integrating nearby allotment gardens, urban biotopes, and the planned “Grüner Stadthafen”, creating a cohesive green network.

Our team has been awarded 4th place in this prestigious competition, won by Studio Wessendorf, Berlinmit Plan und Recht GmbH, Berlin with Atelier Loidl Landschaftsarchitekten.
