1. URBAN FORESTRY/ BOSCOINCITTÀ

AND HOW IT ALL BEGAN

EN

The year 1968 seems to be a universal touchstone. There’s no doubt that society, especially in the West, began to rethink things around that time. Along with its social and political upheavals and the new personal freedoms of everyday life, the era marked a nascent awareness of environmental issues. That small green shoot, which some once regarded as a weed, grew into a pivotal issue. At the same time, new paradigms have arisen in the relationship between city and country. Rural and urban areas are no longer separate. Instead, they flow into each other, constantly seeking the right balance in their relationships with each other. And the urban periphery is no longer the domain of lonely housewives. Instead, vibrant, verdant urban centers have arisen that interact with the traditional heart of the city. Planning has begun to address uncontrolled urban growth. And Nature in turn has moved in to conquer the cities. The forests themselves have begun to advance – in Milan they’re even climbing up the facades of skyscrapers.

We hadn’t come that far yet. Andreas Kipar arrived in Milan in 1984 as an intern, after completing a gardening apprenticeship and receiving his first university degree in Essen, Germany. He was immediately thrown into the Boscoincittà project, in which the environmental association Italia Nostra, which had been given about 80 hectares of an abandoned, rundown, publicly owned estate in northwest Milan, reforested the land with the help of volunteer associations and created a social meeting place for the population. The young German was involved in both the planning phase at the Piazza Duomo office of Giulio Crespi of Italia Nostra and in hands-on field work at Via Novara. Under the skeptical eyes of those involved, one of the things he did was what he had learned from practical experience: he planted trees. But he had to rethink things. He had worked with a shovel in the sandy soil of Essen, but his shovel broke the first time he used it in the clayey soil to the south and west of Milan. Here, trees had to be planted with a pickax.

All’epoca non arrivavamo a tanto.
